Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia

ss89.png

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in specific body areas. It affects millions worldwide, and finding effective treatments can be challenging.

It is often accompanied by fatigue, anxiety or depressed mood, headaches, and sensory hyper-responsiveness... it just hurts EVERYWHERE.

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood. Some doctors speculate that it could be due to multiple factors such as critical nutrient deficiency, leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, or severe/long term trauma and stress -- most of the time, a singular cause simply can't be tracked down through labs results. Much of the time, "fibromyalgia" is a catch all term that physicians use when they simply do not know what's going on. Our fibromyalgia patients have been poked, prodded and prescribed a plethora of medications with little success, and when your doctor has nothing left to offer except for their condolences, it may be time to seek alternative treatment in acupuncture.

What is Fibromyalgia?

All the pain receptors in our body are controlled and modulated by our nervous system. In a healthy individual, the nervous system secretes just the right amount of neurotransmitters in response to illness or stress -- the result is healthy cellular regeneration, better sleep, healthy blood flow that nourishes surrounding tissue, and a proper parasympathetic tone that promotes a sense of control, calm, and clarity of the mind.

When our nervous system undergoes sustained periods of abuse whether it be environmental toxins, overly processed and unhealthy foods, or chronic stress and trauma, systemic inflammation begins to set in. This inflammation hijacks the body and causes disturbances in the central nervous system and how it processes pain signals.

Treatments involving opioids or other narcotic analgesics usually are not effective because they do not reduce the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain and in fact may even worsen symptoms.

What's more, healthy blood flow is completely interrupted. Imagine the body as a sophisticated system of roads and our blood vessels and nerves as the major highways that branch out into smaller branches of side streets and intersections. In order to get to our destination (muscles, brain, major organs) we need traffic to flow smoothly and just the right amount of cars (beneficial anti-inflammatory cytokines and neurotransmitters) on the road that are in good working condition.

When sickness and injury happens, it's like having multiple major crashes along critical routes -- it completely wrecks the flow of traffic which in turn begins to affect our muscles and organs in the form of dysfunctional pain signalling and damaged blood cells.

Smooth flow of blood is not as simple as it sounds -- because the critical aspect of this smooth flow at the capillary level is the deformability potential of the cells. Red blood cells are, incredibly, twice as wide as the capillaries they need to get down, and to do this they need to hold a specific shape that's able to fold and squash through the capillary. Red cells that can't flex either get stuck or split: bad news. Just like how phlegm is sticky, blood can become sticky too. In the case of fibromyalgia, red blood cells become deformed, sticky, and inflexible; sticky or inflexible red cells becomes stuck, clump together, and refuse to pass through smoothly, they then break and cause inflammation.

But my lab results are "normal"?

There are no lab tests that can diagnose fibromyalgia. However, because fibromyalgia symptoms tend to mimic or occur alongside other inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, your doctor may order tests to rule out other causes of your symptoms. A positive results on these tests doesn't necessarily mean you do not have fibromyalgia, but they are used by Western doctors to prescribe certain medications. This is why, even if you are taking the "correct" medication, your pain still persists. No need to worry... our holistic approach involves listening to your unique symptoms to guide your treatment plan.

It's not all in your head... We believe you.

How can treatment benefit me?

At Cucamonga Acupuncture & Wellness, we believe in the power of integrative medicine, personalized plans, and compassionate care to treat the root of the issue, rather than just masking the symptoms. In the case of fibromyalgia, we are able to manage and resolve many of the worst symptoms by regulating the nervous system, promoting healthy blood flow, and improve sleep quality -- fibromyalgia patients more than most need to be able to deep sleep cycle in order to heal faster.

Our goal is for our patients to get their life back, and not have to worry about how much worse it's going to get in the future. Using a refined combination of traditional acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ we are able not only to make the future brighter for our patients but also achieve powerful, lasting results.

One of the advantages of our treatment program that patients love is the low risk of adverse side effects. Compared to pharmacological treatments, acupuncture is a safe and non-invasive option for individuals suffering from neuropathy. You don't have to trade in relief for nasty side effects.

All of our modalities are safe to use on patients who have surgically installed hardware like pins, plates, artificial joints, stents, pacemakers, pumps, and spinal cord stimulators. It can be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatments or as a standalone therapy, depending on the severity and underlying cause of the neuropathy. (Our practitioner of course will better assess risk and approach with caution on a case by case basis.)
